A day in the life of a professional voiceover artist: Behind the scenes of voiceover work

As a professional voiceover artist, I am often asked what the term ‘voiceover’ is all about.

Voiceover (VO for short) is a technical term used in radio and film studio technology. It refers to the sound recording of a voice that is superimposed over another sound recording or over a film scene.

In German, the term is sometimes also used as ‘overvoice’.

Common Applications of Voiceovers

Advertising:

In advertising, the product being promoted is the focal point, while the voiceover artist explains its benefits.

Imagine a car commercial: you see the vehicle in action while a dynamic voice describes the car’s standout features. The voice remains invisible, but its impact is lasting and memorable.

TV Documentaries:

Voiceovers are indispensable in TV documentaries. Stunning visuals are accompanied by a narrator who provides background information. For instance, a documentary on wildlife in the savannah becomes truly informative and captivating thanks to the accompanying voiceover.

Video Games and PC Games:

Voice actors lend their voices to characters in games, contributing to the immersive experience. Well-known film and television voice actors are often hired for video game voiceovers to ensure high recognizability.

Explainer Videos:

In explainer videos, complex information is conveyed in an easily understandable way. The voice guides you through the content, often supported by animations and graphics. Think of a video explaining how a new software tool works.

Corporate Videos:

Companies use voiceovers in their internal and external videos to convey messages clearly and professionally. Whether it’s training videos, corporate presentations, or promotional films—the voiceover plays a crucial role in delivering a polished image.

For example, a video might present a company’s values and vision, supported by a memorable narrator’s voice.

Podcasts and Audiobooks:

A good podcast thrives on an engaging voice that effectively conveys the topic.

The same goes for audiobooks: the voice must match the story, whether it’s a thrilling suspense novel or a soothing love story. Here, the voice serves the author’s work.

Technical Applications:

Voiceover voices are also ubiquitous in technical applications, such as navigation devices, voice assistants, and telephone pro

Behind the Scenes: How a Voiceover is Created

Now that you know what a voiceover is and where it’s used, let me take you behind the scenes of my work as a professional voiceover artist.

A Day in the Life of a Professional Voiceover Artist

As a professional voiceover artist, every successful voiceover begins with careful preparation and a structured work process. Here’s a glimpse into my typical workday:

Text Preparation:

Laying the Foundation

Text Study:

First, I analyze and interpret the text to fully grasp the author’s intent. Every sentence, every word carries meaning, and I want to ensure that I convey the message authentically and accurately.

Research:

Depending on the subject matter, I gather background information. This helps me better understand the context and accurately convey the nuances of the topic. Whether it’s technical details, historical facts, or specific terminology—solid knowledge is essential.

Text Marking:

I mark the text to establish emphasis, pauses, and the correct pace. These markings help me create the mood and dynamics that the text requires.

Practice:

Before heading into the studio, I quietly rehearse more challenging sections, sometimes articulating certain words very clearly. This helps me familiarize myself with the text, perfect my speaking speed, and ensure the right emphasis.

Punctuality and Reliability:

Punctuality is crucial in the studio. Professionalism means I always arrive on time and am ready to start working immediately. The same applies to recordings with clients, whom I connect with in my studio.

Collaboration with the Sound Engineer:

In the studio, I work closely with the sound engineer. Their instructions and feedback are invaluable for achieving the best possible recording.

Focus and Stamina:

Recording requires full concentration and stamina. I ensure that I deliver the text flawlessly and with the right emphasis, even if it takes several takes.

Handling Stage Fright:

Even as a professional, I sometimes experience stage fright, especially when multiple clients from different locations are connected.

Over time, I’ve developed techniques to overcome nervousness and deliver a professional performance.

Post-Production:

Refinement and Perfection
Listening to the Recording: After the recording, I critically listen to the result. I pay attention to the quality and impact of my voice and make notes for any improvements.

Corrections:

If necessary, I make corrections. This means re-recording any flawed passages to ensure a perfect final product.

These steps are essential to achieving the high quality and professionalism my clients expect from me. Each step requires care, precision, and a deep understanding of the art of voiceover work.

The Unique Talent of Voiceover Artists

Voiceover work demands a high level of skill and experience.

While an on-screen actor can use facial expressions and gestures, a voiceover artist must rely solely on their voice to captivate the audience.

It’s about finding the right tone, emphasis, and mood to achieve the desired effect. This requires not only technical skill but also empathy and creativity.
