Hire a Documentary Narrator For Your Project
Documentaries for ZDF and other public broadcasters:
What is documentary film?
A documentary film is the cinematic observation of reality and emphasizes the special quality of the authentic, conveyed by the narrative or also staged view of the filmmaker.
The viewer expects documentaries, unlike fictional material, to have a narrative based on reality.
There is a wide range of different types of documentary films - from the pure, as real as possible insight into the actual state of a document, to the docu-soap, to the docu-drama. Artistic documentary often differs formally from many more journalistic documentary formats in its lack of an omniscient commentary voice; experimental documentary playfully uses elements and conventions of documentary.
Among the best-known German documentary filmmakers are Rosa von Praunheim, Klaus Wildenhahn, Alice Agneskirchner, Heinz Sielmann, and Barbara and Winfried Junge.
In addition to cinema and TV documentaries, the genre also includes radio and audio book documentaries.
The quality of a documentary's narration can determine its success or failure A good documentary voice attracts audiences with a great timbre
Although the voice narrating a documentary may not be the primary focus, a poorly narrated documentary can significantly detract from the audience's viewing experience.
Narrators for documentaries often have a pleasant voice with a calm vocal delivery. They often sound similar to those in a short product or image film or an explainer video. Since documentaries are usually much longer (usually at least 25 to 45 minutes), off-screen narrators need to find an interesting balance so that their commentary is neither monotonous and dragging nor intrusive and garish.
The viewer must be able to listen to the speaker for an extended period of time. In this respect, he or she should have a pleasant voice that conveys the information clearly even after several minutes and keeps the focus on the content of the documentary as a whole.
It is crucial that production teams choose the right voice actors.
Special formats need special vocal solutions
Documentaries are often used to address historical contexts and developments, such as the spread of a disease, the advance of climate change, the emergence of new animal species, or the deconstruction of international money laundering.
For all these topics, dubbing actors are particularly suitable, as they can perfectly guide the viewer through an interesting topic. A voice actor dubs the comments in a fascinating way and with a special touch. The greats in their field should be mentioned here: Norbert Langer, Klaus Dieter Klebsch, Till Hagen and Christian Brückner, as well as Anke Reitzenstein, Bettina Weiß and Daniela Hoffmann.
But younger colleagues have also earned an exclusive place in the first rank of commentators: Tobias Kluckert, Martin Baden as well as Suzanne Vogdt and Juliane Hempel.
The narrator voice: The Voice of Documentary Film
The choice of narrator can also depend on the target audience: For an environmental documentary aimed at children, for example, a teenage narrator would be very suitable. Conversely, a documentary about a music star like Beyoncé would not use a distinguished professor's voice.
Adapting voices through localization
The documentary "Planet Earth" for example, was professionally voiced by David Attenborough in the original BBC version, while Sigourney Weaver did the voiceover for the Discovery Channel's U.S. version and Christian Brückner did the German version.
For films that need to appeal to audiences with different language backgrounds, localizing documentaries by using more than one voice actor is recommended.
And while subtitles can be used, the overall experience of the film is likely to be more personal - and impactful - when viewers hear the documentary spoken in their own language.
